What is Counselling?
Counselling is a confidential and supportive process where a trained professional helps you explore and manage personal challenges. There are times in life where we may feel overwhelmed or stuck and unable to move forwards on our own. A counselling session offers a safe, non-judgmental space to talk, gain insight, and build coping strategies.
What counselling IS:
-
Focused on your personal goals, growth and healing
-
Designed to help with stress, anxiety, relationships, loss, and more
-
Tailored to your needs using proven therapeutic approaches
-
Always private, confidential and respectful

What Counselling Is NOT:
-
Giving advice or telling you what to do
-
It’s not a quick fix or just a chat
-
It’s not the same as psychiatry (which can involve medical diagnosis or medication)

Counselling vs. Psychology: What’s the Difference?

Counselling focuses on helping people manage everyday emotional and life challenges including stress, anxiety, grief, or relationship issues. It’s usually short- to medium-term and aims to support personal growth and coping skills in a safe, non-judgmental space.

Psychology, particularly clinical psychology, goes deeper into diagnosing and treating more complex mental health conditions such as depression, PTSD, or personality disorders. Psychologists are trained to assess mental health using diagnostic tools and may work alongside psychiatrists for more intensive treatment.

Both play vital roles in supporting mental health and wellbeing. The right choice for you will depend on your needs and preferences. However in many cases counselling may suit general life challenges, while psychology may be better for more complex diagnosed mental health conditions.

Finding the right person to work with is important!
A strong connection between you and your counsellor/therapist is often the most important part of therapy. When you feel safe, heard, and understood, it becomes easier to open up and explore what’s really going on.

Good rapport builds trust, creates a supportive space, and helps you feel more comfortable being honest — even about difficult or painful experiences.

Not every counsellor will be the right fit, and that’s okay. If you don’t feel that connection with one person, it’s absolutely okay to try someone else. Finding the right match can make all the difference in your healing journey.
